Blog #8- NBA Lets Fans Vote for MVP

http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/blog/ball_dont_lie/post/Your-vote-actually-counts-so-who-ya-got-for-MVP?urn=nba,231390

Summary:
In basketball there is sometimes some controversy about who should have actually been the MVP of the NBA. The NBA will let their fans vote for MVP for the first time in major pro sports history. There is a catch, the votes by the fans are only counted as one of the 125 votes that determine the league's MVP. The executive vice president of the NBA said that they were willing to let the fans vote for the first time because he feels like they deserve some power and it is a way to reward them for being fans of the NBA. Fans that really think that one player deserves the MVP will probably vote with alacrity(pg.69), the fans will be blissful(pg.46) knowing that their vote and what they think actually counts.

Detail:
-The NBA will let fans vote for MVP
-All of the fans votes will only be one out of the 125 votes that determine the MVP
-If a person votes just one time, that vote might be nugatory(pg.96), there will be millions of people that will vote more than once

Blog #7- Beware of April Fools Day

http://buzz.yahoo.com/buzzlog/93527?fp=1

Summary:
April 1 is the only day of the year where people go around doing pranks and lying to each other, but of course they only lie in a facetious(pg.62) manner. While nobody knows where and how April Fools started, there several theories, but the one theory that is the most famous is that in 1564, King Charles IX of France passed a law that changed the beginning of the year from April 1 to January 1. At first there were people that were misinformed or were just too slow to adjust and they would get mocked and people would pull pranks on them for celebrating New Years on April 1. Another theory is that April 1 is the beginning of Spring and the weather can fool people.

Detail:
-The most famous theory of how April Fools began was in days of yore(pg.83) (1564) in France when the king changed new years from April 1 to January 1
-People have been searching "how to pull April Fools pranks"
-People should watch out for April Fools pranks and try not to be so plausible(pg.94) or else they can get a prank pulled on them

Blog #4- Does Music Affect Kids?

http://behavioural-psychology.suite101.com/article.cfm/is_music_for_more_than_your_ears

Summary:
A lot of the times that a teenager does something bad, the media likes to blame the music that they listen to as the influence for their actions. The two music genres that are targeted the most are rap and hard-rock/heavy metal. One of the most famous incidents where music was said to be the cause of a crime was in 1999, the Columbine High School shooting, where two adolescent(pg.80) high-schoolers took guns to school and started shooting and killing people. When the media is looking for the reason of why someone would do something so bad, they start to rationalize(pg.94) and look for something that they can easily blame. Music can affect kids, but it is rare when music affects them to the point where they go on a killing spree, because there are millions of people who listen to rock and rap who don't do anything bad.

Detail:
-The media sometimes blames rap and heavy metal rock when a teenager goes wild
-There were 12 students and teachers who died and 24 other students and faculty who had astringent(pg.59) injuries.
-The type of music that a teenager listens to does not define them

Blog #2- Eli Manning won't take money

http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/blog/shutdown_corner/post/Eli-Manning-won-t-take-broke-hospital-s-money?urn=nfl,223215

Summary:
Eli Manning, who has consanguinuity(pg.72) with more well known quarterback Peyton Manning, rejected 500,000 dollars that St. Vincent's hospital in New York owes him. The Hospital owes him money because Eli Manning has done marketing for them, but he knows that the hospital is having financial problems. He is letting them keep the money while he will continue to do fund-raising at his own volition(pg.69). This is the right thing for him to do because he is an NFL quarterback and he already gets paid millions of dollars per year and it would be wrong for a person with that much money to accept 500,000 dollars from a bankrupt hospital that is already cutting salaries and jobs. He has won kudos (pg.61) for not accepting the money, but people are criticizing him because he has already accepted 500,000 dollars from them before and people think that this has tarnished his image.

Detail:
-St. Vincent's hospital in New York owes Eli Manning 500,000 dollars
-Eli Manning is not accepting the money because he knows that the hospital needs it more
-People are criticizing him for previously accepting money from them
